As per recent study, conducted at Massachusetts
General Hospital, Boston USA, the major diagnostic discrepancies / errors
are up to 20-30% of cases, suggesting that the working or final clinical
diagnosis may be wrong in as many as one in five patients overall.
Diagnostic errors are estimated to
account for 40,000–80,000 deaths
annually in U.S. hospitals alone. These figures only partially
account for patients whose ambulatory misdiagnoses
lead to death, and they do not include
nonlethal disability, which may be just as
common as death.
