PACS is an acronym for Picture Archiving and Communication Software. In simple terms, this software helps the machine output to be seen at any distance. Technically, the purpose of PACS program is to transport high resolution diacom images in radiology from one place or one machine to another.
PACS should be dynamic in usage
According to it usage, the PACS are dynamic. There are three kinds of PACS possible based on storage and networks.
1. Console PACS
2. LAN PACS
3. Web PACS
4. Cloud PACS
1. Console PACS
COnsole PACS is proprietary software by the manufacturer available on the machine itself. Images can be seen directly on the console.
2. LAN PACS
LAN PACS is third party software designed and installed to copy images from Console to other destination. Here the console needs to be networked on LAN with the destination computer. The storage is local. Here it needs to have software to view the Diacom Images.
3. Web PACS
Web PACS is again a third party software designed and installed in order to transfer images from one destination to another. Web PACS takes help from the faster internet to transfer images. For Example CT Contrast Images of Abdomen and Pelvis could be 1GB in size. The interface could be web-based in order to report the cases. It needs an extra application hosted on a web-server to see the Diacom Images for reporting purposes.
It can either provide local storage or additional storage on remote web servers.
4. Cloud PACS
Cloud PACS uses cloud IT infrastructure to transfer images from one destination to another. The images are stored locally and on clouds where the access is given to multiple screens for radiologists to report the cases. Generally apart from the router there is no need of installing any software at the diagnostic facility. This is quite a faster means of transfer of images however big they are but at costs. The images can be be rendered anywhere on any machine even on mobile provided there is a hosted application to view dicom images.
